Illicit trade, including smuggling and counterfeiting, poses a significant challenge with far-reaching economic and consumer safety implications. The proliferation of counterfeit and illegally traded goods exposes consumers to serious risks, including unsafe products and compromised quality, undermines consumer trust, and threatens public health. Through greater awareness, stronger enforcement, and coordinated action among government agencies, industry, civil society, and consumers, it is possible to curb illicit trade and safeguard economic stability and public well-being.
FICCI CASCADE has been actively engaged in raising awareness about the threats of smuggling and counterfeiting, highlighting its economic, social, and security implications both in India and globally. In response to this pressing issue and reinforce these efforts, FICCI CASCADE is organising a seminar on “Protecting Consumers: Addressing the Threat of Smuggling and Counterfeiting” on 8th April 2026 at FICCI, New Delhi. The seminar aims to provide a platform for meaningful dialogue and exchange of perspectives among policymakers, consumer activists , enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders on the growing risks posed by illicit trade and the collective measures required to protect consumers and strengthen market integrity.

Illicit trade has emerged as a serious challenge to national economies and governance systems worldwide. It undermines lawful commerce, distorts market competition, and weakens the foundation of legitimate industry. The circulation of unregulated and substandard products poses significant risks to consumer safety, while the proceeds from such activities often finance organised crime. Beyond revenue losses to the government, illicit trade damages institutional credibility and disrupts sustainable economic growth.
Addressing this complex challenge places law-enforcement agencies at the centre of the response. Police forces play a pivotal role in identifying, disrupting, and dismantling illegal supply chains. Their effectiveness depends on continuous capacity enhancement, access to updated intelligence, and exposure to modern investigative tools and techniques.

Chairman Speak
Over the years, Illicit trade has undeniably become one of the greatest risks globally. It has played havoc with the social and economic well-being of nations across the world. Illicit trade undermines investments, creates unequal playing field for the legitimate businesses and for some time now provides the fuel that energizes the terror machine.
