Agra police on Tuesday arrested two members of an inter-state liquor smuggling gang and seized 415 cartons of illegal foreign liquor, estimated to be worth around Rs 45 lakh, from a truck in the Trans Yamuna area.
The Trans Yamuna police team was conducting checking and patrolling when it received information that a truck carrying liquor allegedly sourced illegally from Punjab was parked near Jharna Nala on the highway towards Firozabad. The consignment was allegedly being transported to Bihar.
Acting on the tip-off, police reached the spot and arrested the two occupants of the truck — driver Daluram and Nanagaram, both residents of Barmer in Rajasthan. A truck, two mobile phones and Rs 4,580 in cash were also seized. An FIR was registered under Sections 60, 63 and 72 of the Excise Act.
DCP Agra (City) Sayed Ali Abbas told TOI, “During interrogation, the accused told police that the 415 cartons were concealed under sacks of paddy husk. They claimed the liquor had been purchased cheaply in Punjab and was being transported to Bihar, where it could fetch a higher price.”
