
Meghalaya BSF seized smuggled goods worth Rs 39 cr in 2020.
Shillong: The lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic led to a reduction in cross-border smuggling but rose once the lockdown was relaxed, said Inspector General of the Border Security Force, Meghalaya Frontier, Hardeep Singh on Friday.
In a press conference held at BSF HQ in Shillong, Singh informed that in 2020, the BSF apprehended 171 trans-border criminals. Also, 16 illegal entrants were nabbed in the border area by the BSF.
Out of this 171, 167 were smugglers from India and 4 from Bangladesh. While illegal entrants nabbed, four were Indian, nine Bangladeshis and three Nigerians.
Reacting to the arrest of Nigerians, a senior police official told EastMojo on the condition of anonymity, “Bangladesh provides a good market for narcotics. When there is a demand for drugs in India, they cross the border. Sometimes it is for delivering drugs, and on other occasions, it is to collect drug money.”

Kishanganj (Bihar) [India], January 8 (ANI): A total number of 10 persons were arrested as seven vehicles laden with over 11,000 litres of illegal liquor were seized during a drive in Kishanganj district on Thursday.
On the basis of information by a police officer, a Special Investigation Team was formed under the leadership of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer against alcohol consumption.
An investigation is underway.
In 2016, chief minister Nitish Kumar banned alcohol consumption in Bihar making it a dry state.

Dr. Muktesh Chander, Special Commissioner, Delhi Police said that “Actual occurrences of cases of counterfeiting and smuggling are much more than reported.” He further added that the increasing surveillance, creating public awareness and coordination amongst law enforcement agencies and stakeholders are vital to counter the problem of counterfeiting and smuggling effectively.
Speaking at the ‘In Conversation Series’, Dr. Chander discussed the scenario of counterfeiting and smuggling in India, need for greater cyber security & cyber hygiene and strengthening enforcement & investigation mechanism to address illicit trade.
Mr. Anil Rajput, Chairman, FICCI CASCADE said, “In India, since lockdown, our enforcement agencies have raided and seized smuggled, spurious and counterfeit sanitizers, masks, PPE Kits, disinfectants, toiletries and cosmetics, electronic goods, cigarettes, packaged food, spices, alcohol and several other items across various states. They not only put a spoke in illicit trader’s wheels but remained in an absolutely perfect state of alertness, thereby thwarting many attempts by them to spread their illegal, illicit, and sub-standard products.”
Mr. Deep Chand, Former Special Commissioner, Delhi Police and Advisor, FICCI CASCADE said, “Counterfeiting and smuggling are serious crimes damaging the world economy while the common consumer faces health and safety issues and the genuine industry suffers a huge loss due to illicit products.” He further emphasised that COVID-19 has provided opportunity to criminals to exploit the current situation to find new ways to make money. They are increasing and diversifying their activities through a wide range of crimes and scams which exploit the fear and uncertainty surrounding the virus.
FICCI CASCADE has been over the years working closely with government, industry, enforcement officials, legal fraternity, consumer organizations and the youth to create awareness on the adverse impact of the problem of counterfeiting and smuggling. One of FICCI CASCADE’s mandate is capacity building of law enforcement agencies and it has worked extensively and intensively in this area; organizing training programmes for police officers across India and interactions with the law enforcement authorities to emphasize on the importance of awareness and seriousness of the impact of counterfeit and smuggled goods.

Cops seize big haul of smuggled liquor during raid, man arrested.
A police team of the anti-smuggling cell, led by Inspector Yash Pal Sharma, struck a big haul of smuggled liquor with the recovery of 64 boxes (containing 12 bottles each) of smuggled liquor in a raid conducted at Rajiv Gandhi Colony under the Focal Point police station here today.
A Tata Canter vehicle was impounded and a person, Nand Lal, a resident of Bela Tajowal, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, was nabbed with the contraband during the raid.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Rakesh Agrawal said it was under the drive to curb illegal distillation, sale and inter-state smuggling of liquor that the anti-smuggling cell had received a tip-off regarding the gang of liquor smugglers.
He said the police seized 22 boxes of 111 Ace Whisky, 28 boxes of 777 Oak Whisky and 14 boxes of Sikkim Special Whisky from the spot.

POLICEMEN, backed by Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (MDRRMC) personnel, seized a shipment of smuggled cigarettes following a brief chase in Zamboanga del Sur, an official said Monday, January 4.
Police Captain Edwin Duco, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said the shipment was seized around 5 p.m. Sunday on Rizal Street in San Pedro Village, Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur.
Duco said the policemen and MDRRMC personnel were manning a checkpoint in Purok Talisay, Lower Landing village, Dumingag, when a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) driven by Romer Beron, 42, disregarded the checkpoint and sped off, prompting them to chase the SUV.
Duco said the SUV was found loaded with 10 master cases of smuggled cigarettes when Berong voluntarily opened the window of the SUV when he was cornered in San Pedro village. The estimated value of the confiscated smuggled cigarettes was placed at P75,000.

GST officials bust illegal tobacco factory in Delhi, seize goods worth Rs 4 crore.
A team of the Central Goods and Services Tax (GST) Delhi West Commissionerate busted an illegal manufacturing unit of gutka, pan masala, and other tobacco products in Delhi, seizing goods worth Rs 4 crores. The officials estimated a total GST evasion of more than Rs 830 crores.
The information about the same was shared in a press release on January 2, detailing the materials and products seized from the site.
“On basis of the search at the premise of manufacture, it was found that illegal manufacturing of gutkha/pan masala/tobacco product was going on, evidenced by a godown, machines, raw materials and manufactured products at the premises,” the press release said.
Lear More3-year-old gold smuggling racket busted at Delhi’s IGI Airport
NEW DELHI: Customs at Indira Gandhi International Airport has busted a nearly three-year-old gold smuggling racket and arrested three men — the carrier, the collector and the supplier — all in the past two weeks.
The officials said they were alerted about the racket when the carrier was arrested on December 15. Using a new modus operandi to evade the cops, the accused had painted the gold plate silver and stuck it to the side of the trolley. To make the plate blend in further, stickers, which are commonly used on trolleys, were pasted on top of the plate.
Officials said the man was crucial in busting the racket, as he helped to find the gold and nab the other men.
An official said, on the day of the arrest, the man appeared to be walking suspiciously and was seen putting something in his trolley. “Upon inspection, one side of the trolley appeared to be new, while the trolley looked old. The plate had been freshly painted, and when the surface was scrapped, it was found to be 1.5kg gold, worth Rs 74.8 lakh,” said the official.

Contraband goods worth Rs 74 lakhs seized in Tripura
West Tripura (Tripura) [India], January 2 (ANI): The security forces seized a total of 493 Kilograms of various contraband goods worth Rs 74 lakhs in a joint operation in the West Tripura district of Tripura, Assam Rifles said on Saturday.
The joint operation was carried out by Assam Rifles along with Director Revenue Intelligence and Customs Department. Contraband is commonly defined as goods prohibited by law from being imported or exported.
“A joint operation by Assam Rifles along with Director Revenue Intelligence and Customs Department in Tripura yielded 493 Kilograms of various contraband goods, the worth of which, is around Rs 74 lakhs. The goods were seized in Simna in West Tripura district,” Assam Rifles said in a tweet.

CISF Nabs 2 Persons At IGI Airport, Seizes Foreign Currency Worth Rs 28 Lakh
A Dubai-bound Indian passenger and his associate were apprehended by the CISF at the Delhi airport on Wednesday for allegedly smuggling about Rs 28 lakh worth Saudi Riyals, a senior official said.
Mohammed Fared was intercepted during security checks at the terminal-III of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
A total of 1.47 lakh Saudi Riyals worth Rs 28 lakh was recovered from his bag, they said.
A man, identified as Asif, who dropped the passenger outside the departure terminal, was also nabbed by the security personnel.
“Both of them have been handed over to Customs authorities for a full investigation. The passenger could not answer satisfactorily as to why was he carrying this huge amount of currency,” a senior Central Industrial Security Force officer said.

Chennai: Airport Employee, Passenger From Dubai Held For Gold Smuggling
They said the security personnel found that the passenger, Niyamatullah Hadi, was behaving in a suspicious manner as he entered a bathroom located in the airport terminal soon after 8 AM.
A software engineer working at the Chennai airport and a passenger who arrived from Dubai were apprehended on Monday for allegedly smuggling gold bars worth Rs 1.5 crore, the CISF said.
They said the security personnel found that the passenger, Niyamatullah Hadi, was behaving in a suspicious manner as he entered a bathroom located in the airport terminal soon after 8 AM.
The passenger had landed from Dubai on an Emirates flight.
Security personnel intercepted Nizhal Ravi, a software engineer working with a company called Infosoft Digital Design & Services Pvt Ltd at the airport, after he exited the washroom “in a doubtful manner”, the CISF said in a statement.
