Chennai: He made multiple flight trips, used fake Aadhaar IDs, and risked gold worth 1 crore by leaving it unattended in a flight for two days. However, the smuggler from Chennai was outsmarted by customs sleuths at the city airport. They arrested him and seized a little more than 2 kg of 24-carat gold.Sleuths secured the flyer on June 14 at the domestic terminal when he arrived from Kolkata.
As much as 1.13 kg of gold in paste form was seized from him. However, investigation revealed that he originally smuggled the gold from Abu Dhabi to Mumbai and attempted to bring it to Chennai via a domestic route to avoid suspicion.Customs sources said the smuggler carried gold in paste form from Abu Dhabi on June 12 and stuck the gold under the seat he travelled in. He exited the Mumbai airport without the gold and flew to Chennai. While tracking the flight using its unique number, he found out that the same aircraft was flying to Chennai from Kolkata on June 14.
