Hubballi: The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police have arrested a man accused of defrauding individuals by promising low-interest business loans and using fake currency — actually toy notes — to deceive victims.
The accused, A. Mohammad Asif, who operated under the alias Sudhir Mehta and hails from Mysuru, was taken into custody by the CCB. Officials seized counterfeit notes totaling Rs 1.87 crore, which he had handed over to a woman as part of the fraudulent deal. The fake currency, resembling children’s play money, was reportedly used to create an illusion of a legitimate transaction.
Along with the fake currency, police also recovered Rs 5,000 in genuine Rs 500 denomination notes, a car valued at Rs 4 lakh, and two mobile phones. Asif has been remanded to judicial custody.
