MUMBAI: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai, busted a gold smuggling racket at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Sahar, by arresting five people, including two airport employees, and seized 6.3 kg of smuggled gold worth Rs 4.84 crore. Last year, more than two dozen airport and airline staffers were arrested for aiding and abetting the syndicate.
Gold worth ₹66 cr seized from Ahmedabad, Surat airports in 2024
By the end of 2024, officers from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized a total of 93 kilograms of gold worth ₹66 crore from Ahmedabad and Surat airports. Throughout the year, DRI officers conducted several daring operations to catch gold smugglers. One such operation led to the seizure of 48 kilograms of gold in a single case.
On May 24, at Ahmedabad’s International Airport, two passengers arriving from Abu Dhabi were caught with gold paste hidden in their undergarments. Upon receiving a tip-off, DRI officers immediately began tracking them.
Businessman arrested for smuggling Rs. 10 million worth of cigarettes and whisky
Colombo, December 31 (Daily Mirror) – A 45-year old businessman was arrested for smuggling foreign cigarettes and whisky worth Rs. 10 million, at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning by the Airport Police. The suspect is a resident of Prince of Wales Road, Colombo 14 and frequently engaging in air travel for business purposes.
He had arrived at the Katunayake Airport on December 31 at 3:50 a.m. aboard an Indigo Airlines flight (6E-1164) from Bangalore, India.
Year-end shock: Over 9,800 fake notes worth ₹43.11 lakh recovered in Ahmedabad banks
Ahmedabad’s Special Operations Group (SOG) has uncovered a significant counterfeit currency racket. The investigation, spanning months, has led to the recovery of 9,837 fake currency notes of various denominations in 2024.These notes, detected primarily when unsuspecting individuals attempted to deposit them in banks, amount to a total of ₹43.11 lakh.
The case sheds light on a pressing issue in India’s financial system: counterfeit currency infiltrating the market and going unnoticed until random detection. The investigation was initiated earlier this year after multiple banks, including ICICI, Axis, HDFC, Yes Bank, and SBI, reported suspicious notes.

DRI (Department of Revenue Intelligence) officials arrested one Nayan Dhamelia, a passenger who came from Bangkok with gold in an air compressor at Ahmedabad international airport on December 25 and remanded him in judicial custody.Dhamelia is from Surat and was smuggling gold on orders of Bhavin Patolia, another resident of Surat. Patolia had paid for the air ticket and expenses to come from Bangkok to Ahmedabad for Dhamelia.

Illegal liquor worth Rs 40 lakh being smuggled into Bihar seized, 1 arrested
One person has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle illegal liquor worth Rs 40 lakh hidden under the sacks of paddy husk in Bihar’s Nawada, police said on Saturday.
After receiving a tip-off, the police of the excise department intercepted a truck and recovered the consignment of liquor at Rajauli integrated check post, when it was being smuggled from Jharkhand’s Chauparan into Muzaffarpur in Bihar.
“A total of 3,481 bottles of foreign liquor were hidden in 395 cartons under the paddy straw in a truck. The liquor is valued to be around Rs 40 lakh rupees,” an official said. Also, the truck bearing registration number JH 09M 1878 has also been confiscated.
Fake currency dealer arrested
New Delhi: A 36-year-old scrap dealer, identified as Kausar Ali, was arrested near the Sanjay Gandhi Transport Area in northwest Delhi for possessing fake Indian currency notes (FICN). The police recovered 190 FICN notes of Rs 500 denomination, totalling Rs 95,000.
During interrogation, Kausar revealed that he worked as a scrap dealer in Malda, West Bengal. In pursuit of quick money, he came into contact with anti-social elements and began circulating and trafficking FICN.TNN
Gujarat FDCA busts firms ‘adulterating nutrition-linked products with aphrodisiacs
The Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) has busted an alleged fraud of exporting aphrodisiac allopathic ingredients, mixed with nutraceutical (food or food-related component that provides health benefits) products, to African nations, as well as a factory manufacturing fake allopathic medicines without a license.
Adulterated and fake medicines worth about Rs 32 lakh were seized, officials said on Saturday. A flying squad of the Gujarat FDCA, along with drug inspectors of Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), questioned the three partners of the firm, M/s. Joinhub Pharma LLP, as well as two persons in charge of purchase — Bhavesh Patel and Nazar Mohammed Saudi — at their office at Mondeal Heights in Ahmedabad. Ahmed Abbas Balospura, Abbas Ali Balospura, Sanket Shah are the three firm partners who have been questioned.
Adulterated tea network busted in Koppal
Koppal: The public is persistently worried about the illegal storage, sale, and consumption of contaminated food items in the district. A recent case surfaced, uncovering a network engaged in storing and distributing adulterated tea powder.
Reports suggest widespread adulteration of tea across the district. Non-branded or counterfeit tea powder containing harmful colorants and flavouring agents is being widely distributed and consumed. Sources indicate an active network distributing such substandard, adulterated tea under various counterfeit brands.
Customs seize smuggled cigarettes, alcohol worth over RM1.6mil
TEMERLOH: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) successfully dismantled smuggling activities involving cigarettes and alcohol worth over RM1.6mil in three separate raids in Johor and Selangor.
Pahang Customs director Mohd Asri Seman said that in the first operation on Dec 3, the Temerloh JKDM Enforcement Branch raided a house in Ulu Tiram, Johor, which was being used as a storage facility for kretek and white cigarettes.
